Finding Your Niche
When I first started out, I did not actually know what TreeLilys INC. was. My only business vision was of a brick and mortar plant shop. (I know, right?!) My first event, I had everything on my table from hand-painted pottery and houseplants to my collages to offers of $5 tarot readings.
It was a mess.
BUT- people vote with their wallet. At the beginning, people bought art and plants at a similar speed. Then, the art really took off. People stopped buying plants from me as much. I saw the market getting saturated with other Covid small businesses centered on houseplants and I pivoted to concentrate on what really made me special: my art.
In a way, honestly, I was just hiding behind the plants. I was not confident in the monetary value of my art and I was newly addicted to houseplants to battle my post apocalyptic postpartum depression.
I trust my clientele to steer my business better than any investors or shareholders ever could. I followed my customers and now am a professional collage artist for a living.

Especially when I have down time at events, I focus on networking with other small business owners. I embrace collaboration opportunities. Give them a business card. Make note of their name and info in the Market spreadsheet.
